he Tannery, the elegant Victorian shopping arcade nestled in the heart of Woolston, now boasts a newly completed car park. Opened on April 1 by owner and developer Alasdair Cassels, the facility will enable shoppers to walk back and forth to their cars free of dust in summer and mud in winter. The official launch attended by guests and staff took place in the late afternoon sun and was accompanied by the popping of corks and the clink of glasses as toasts to the future were made.

McMaster Heap Veterinary practice

A TURTLE EMERGENCY Donatello is a very loved 17 year old male Red-Ear Slider turtle who presented to our clinic after falling from stairs onto a concrete surface and fracturing his top shell (Carapace). An open fracture was apparent, approximately 15cm across the end portion of his shell, and this was mildly displaced.

A turkish red pine seedling from the original lone pine at Gallipoli, will be planted at Rannerdale Veterans’ Care facility on Anzac Day. The seedling will be one of three to be planted around Christchurch to commemorate the 100th anniversary this month. The others will be planted at Burnham Military Camp and The Park of Remembrance. New Zealand Crown Research Institute Scion, based at the Canterbury University, has grown the seedlings at the School of Biological Sciences glasshouse. Scion researcher Alan Leckie said the seedlings will become the most important trees in New Zealand in terms of their Anzac connections. “These trees are providing a memorial to

Donatello’s fracture needed to be addressed as soon as possible - just like any animal with a fracture. He received pain relief and antibiotics while the wound was cleaned, decontaminated and local anesthetic was applied. The next step in repair was more out of the ordinary than usual for us at McMaster & Heap and involved working with our local human dental clinic - Halswell Dental Centre. They helped us to apply a glass ionomer filling which is a modern product used in dentistry for permanent tooth fillings. This material contains a special silicate cement which releases fluorine to provide a local antibacterial effect and increases binding of calcium to mineralized tissue. The cement binds to the calcium component of bones and gives it a high strength. This up to date modern way of fixing turtle shell fractures has been used with great success to seal the fractures and allow fast healing.

Donatello went home the same day on pain relief and antibiotics. He will have to stay in shallow water for a few weeks to allow the carapace to heal completely. It was such a joy working with him as he was a very compliant patient and to see him walking around his enclosure straight after the fixation was great. He obviously felt a lot better now his shell was stable again.

or returning to activity, with a focus on enjoying being active and giving things a go. The Green Prescription team also offers a free one-on-one consultation with a team of well-being specialists.

Rannerdale gets Anzac commemorative seedling

A turtle’s shell provides physical protection, shelter for hibernation and storage for fat and calcium. The shell is made of dermal bone covered with horny keratin layers known as scutes. These scutes are similar to the scales of other reptiles and overlap the seams between the shell bones and add strength to the shell. Traumatic injury to a turtles shell is one of the most common problems turtles present to veterinary clinics for.

Once we arrived at the dental centre, Donatello was met with great enthusiasm. Thankfully with the help of one of their experienced dental surgeons, we aligned the fracture and applied the glass ionomer cement. As with our own dental fillings, a blue light was used to cure it and within a minute the fracture was stabilized. The glass ionomer cement will come off when the scutes are shed over time and the fracture heals.

A new programme to get west Christchurch residents active and fit is starting this month in Wigram. The Be Active programmes are designed for anyone new or returning to physical activity and will run every for eight weeks at the Harvard Community Lounge between 1-2.30pm. The first session is on April 29. The programmes will include low impact exercise, aqua jogging or aquacise, gym, sports, dance and discuss topics that support a healthy lifestyle in terms of motivation, types of exercise, healthy eating and managing stress. The cost is $3 per group activity session. All activities are suited to people new

honour the memory of all those who have served and passed. The World War 1 campaign in Gallipoli, Turkey, was one of the darkest events in New Zealand military history. Of the 7500 New Zealand casualties at Gallipoli, 2721 soldiers died. The lone pine tree in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery on the Gallipoli Peninsula holds the highest memorial significance for Australians and New Zealanders.

Mixed response for crossing plan BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Plans to improve a pedestrian crossing which has the highest collision rate in the city has received mixed feedback from the public. The city council is proposing to replace the Riccarton Rd zebra crossing, which is between Rattray St and Shand Cres, with pedestrian operated traffic signals. But the plans will mean the loss of parking outside the Naresh Foodstore. In 2014, city council traffic engineering staff conducted a study of reported collision rates at zebra pedestrian crossings in the city. The predominant collision types were motor vehicles colliding with crossing pedestrians or ‘nose to tail’ collisions. The results showed about seven crossings had a rate of two or three collisions reported, when the Riccarton Rd crossing had 14, the highest in the city. The proposal to change the crossing went out for public consultation in February and 39 responses were received. Of those, 18 per cent were for the changes, 54 per cent were against and 28 per cent made no comment. The main concerns from those who submitted was the loss of the Riccarton Rd side parking outside the store. Naresh Foodstore owner Naresh Patel said it would result in the loss of about two to three

Night work to carry out pipe lining to the wastewater main and public wastewater laterals in Riccarton and Addington streets continues this week. The work is happening between 7pm and 6am and is expected to finish on April 23. The work will take place on Division and Clarence streets, Clarence St South, Whiteleigh Ave, Parade Court and Lincoln Rd.

Halswell Rd (State Highway 75), from Lillian St to Nicholls Rd, will be closed on April 25 from 8-10.30am for the Anzac Day parade. The closure will apply to all vehicle traffic with the exception of emergency service vehicles.

He said the majority of his customers were heading into town and would stop off on the north side of the road in those parks for convenience. If those parks were gone he would lose a lot of business because they were used on a regular basis, he said. “It puts me in a rough situation.” He said safety for those trying

to cross the road was important, but the changes could be made as well as keeping the parks. “I can’t see why both of them can’t work at the same time.” One submitter said they went to the dairy most mornings for some sort of supplies and not having easy access to the dairy would “almost certainly” stop them from going there. But in a response to the sub-

missions, the city council said it prioritised the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle users over the loss of kerb side parking. It also said time restricted parking would remain on Puriri St for those wanting to stop outside the store. Former chef has a Gary Elford has just released his third poetry book which features a number of stories about his family members. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to him about the book, moving to New Zealand and his career as both a chef and a teacher. So Gary can you tell me a bit about yourself? Yes, well I’m 60-years-old, I’ve got three children and a lovely wife, Jane, who also has three children. And together we have 18 grandchildren between us. We live in domestic bliss in Spreydon. We’ve got 20 different types of fruit trees at home and Jane has a flower garden. It certainly keeps Jane a lot busier than me. In an earlier life I trained as a professional cook, so I spent 20 years as a chef in Australia, Wellington and Southland. Then I went on to teaching, I got my teaching diploma in Wellington at Victoria. Then for the last 20 odd years I’ve been teaching. In Christchurch I’ve been relief teaching. What schools do you relief teach for? Kirkwood Intermediate School, Christchurch South Intermediate and Hornby High School. I quite often lay awake in the mornings waiting for

the phone to ring to call me in. I’ve sort of found a niche in the intermediate age. I love the kids of that age, they are still kids, but they can be treated as adults. And do you specialise in a particular subject? No, I teach right across the board. What do you spend the rest of your time doing? I do a little bit of writing, I’m a poet foremost. I have a oneman show that I do as well. I have an unplugged show based around my poetry and I do a few folk and country songs. And the plugged version is both dance and country rock. I also play in a band called The Incredible Ceilidh and an Eng-

Then I get called down to Southland to play in Little Green Men. I’m off to Te Anau soon to play with the band at a wedding. You must be very busy. I’m really lucky because I love all the things that I do. It’s a busy life that’s full of engaging activities that I really enjoy. I’m feeling very blessed. And you are originally from Australia, what part?

I grew up in New South Wales, in a place called Port Macquarie. All my family is still over there, I’m the only one that escaped to the sanity of New Zealand. I have a large family, we are all very close. What brought you over to New Zealand? We were travelling around Australia and a job came up in Tekapo. From the minute I stepped off the plane I absolutely fell in love with New Zealand.

taste for writing poetry Just the people, the scenery and even the weather. In Australia it would be hot in summer and get a bit colder in winter, but no great change. Here you have four distinct seasons and each season brings excitement. We were in Tekapo for nine months then moved to Wellington for a 12-month contract. I specialised in going to hotels and restaurants and worked to get them back in a positive operating environment. Just making sure everything was right and the customers were happy. I took up another contract in Te Anau and worked there for 18 months and then bought a restaurant in Riverton. It was called The Rivertonian back in those days, that was many lives ago. Then I went into teaching. I taught at three schools and stayed in the one classroom the whole time. The school I was teaching at started as Kingswell High School, it then changed to Mt Anglem College and it is now Aurora College. I taught food technology there. Then I moved to Christchurch to be with my wife. She was a district nurse and we made Air NZ very profitable for a time as we commuted from Southland to Christchurch. And you are releasing a new book Strength in Adversity, can you tell me a bit about that? So the new book is a series of 30 historical poems. By their very nature they are epics. And I say that in a way that they are very long

FAMILY HISTORY: Gary Elford’s new book Strength in Adversity features stories about three of his great uncles, the Hudson brothers, who fought in World War 1 and survived. From left: Alonso ‘Lonnie’ Wilson Hudson, Justice ‘Justy’ Wilson Hudson and Osman ‘Ossie’ John Hudson. poems that tell stories. The book is divided into three sections. The first is about my great great great grandfather who came to Australia as a convict, so the first 13 poems tell his stories. The second section is about three of my great uncles who went to World War 1. They came from a small farming community and from that community there were eight boys who went to World War 1, and of the eight, the three brothers were the only ones that survived. When they came back they were all totally different characters. The first one came back as a war hero, he lost his leg in battle and although he came back as a hero,

he didn’t spend much time in the frontline. The second was the real hero, he served as a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli, then in France and Belgium. Then he retrained as a lewis gunner, a really dangerous job. After the war he stayed another 12 months cleaning up. He was the real hero I think. Then the younger brother went over illegally because he was under age. He served his time and came back as a pacifist. The last section features two stories of the next generation, one was a second cousin of mine who went on to become a female politician in New South Wales. She was

the person in Australia who set up the child endowment scheme. The other is about another second cousin who is still alive. He served in the army as an 18-yearold in World War 2. When he came back all he wanted to do was be a builder. He wanted to be a carpenter but because he had been away he came back and had missed the cut off. He struggled to settle down and was working in a milk factory. One of the people he worked with asked him to come and play rugby league with him. So he started playing in his mid 20s and he went on to become a Kangaroo. They all connect with

strength and adversity. And a lot of the stories are about people in your family? Most are relations. It all started in 2010 when I went over to a family reunion and a cousin had done a heap of research on the family. It took about five years to write, I really did enjoy writing it. It was a totally different approach from when you get a light bulb idea. It had to be researched and all mapped out. It was like a job, I had to sit down and write. And it was launched over the weekend at the Canterbury Folk Festival in Waipara, will it be launching anywhere else? We are doing a book launch in Australia in May. And this is your third book, can you tell me about the other two? The first book was called Beneath The Sugar Loaf which was a collection of family stories. There is a poem in there of my father’s shark attack which happened near Port Macquarie. He was attacked by a bull shark and received 150 stitches in his leg and his brother was also attacked and killed. The second was called The Night The Rat Slipped Out. They are more humorous stories from my time in New Zealand. You have a lot of interesting stories in the family. That’s the advantage of a big family. But there are also disadvantages. • Strength in Adversity can be purchased online at www. garyelford.com

Sexual assaults increase •From page 1 Riccarton resident Peter Preston had a laptop stolen from his flat last month. His Suva St flat had a party and his laptop was connected to the speakers playing music. In the morning he could not find it and thought one of his flatmates had hidden it for safe keeping, but it never turned up. He did not initially report it missing to police because he thought the chances of them being able to track it down were slim. He lived in a flat of 13 and collectively they thought they knew every one at the party. “But someone could have come off the street and helped themselves.” The laptop was password protected, and about two weeks ago Mr Preston got a Facebook message from a girl asking what his password was. “It was a bit weird.” He then contacted police and gave them the serial number for the laptop and then went back to the girl to see why she had the laptop. She had purchased it off a Facebook buy and sell page and thought Mr Preston was the person who had sold it to her, but had forgotten to remove the password. Police had been in contact and following it up, and Mr

A survey, which is part of a neighbourhood safety programme, is giving Riccarton West residents a chance to have their say on how they want their community to be. The survey is part of a United States programme called SafeGrowth which is currently operating in Riccarton and Phillipstown. City council crime prevention team leader Sue Ramsay said SafeGrowth was piloted in Phillipstown in October 2013 and introduced in Riccarton west in September last year. “SafeGrowth is designed to promote community resilience, and connected and cohesive neighbourhoods. “Phillipstown and Riccarton West were chosen as the first suburbs to support the excellent work of neighbourhood police teams in these areas.” Other neighbourhoods had since expressed interest in adopting the programme, but future funding would need to be found for this to happen, she said. Resident Anusha Ravishankar has lived in Riccarton West for nearly seven years. It is a “peaceful” suburb and she had no plans to leave, she said. She had not seen any crime in the area apart from one car which had been broken into on her street a couple of years ago. She often visited Harrington Park with her children in the school holidays, and felt safe walking on the street at night. Senior Sergeant Pete Stills said the survey was about asking residents what was important to them. “What in their community do they want us to do for them that concerns them. Sometimes our view is different to theirs on what’s problematic in the community.” It was an opportunity to start focusing on other community concerns as well as crime, he said. The feedback will be collated and used to make a neighbourhood safety plan, aimed to build neighbourhood ownership, and make the neighbourhood a better place to live, work, and play. Wednesday last week saw the Addington crew responding to a fire in their own station. In reality they had a laminator overheat and turned it off. I mention it here because they did exactly what we ask the public to do. Even though they could handle the incident it was reported. So if laminators of that type start going on fire across the country we will have a record. In the case of a stovetop fire you might suffer, our crews can ensure that flame has not spread into extractors or walls. It’s what we do. Respond to fire. Speaking of stovetop fires, they can happen anywhere. Even in a Chinese restaurant in Riccarton, where the staff went home, inadvertently leaving a pot on the stove last Saturday night. The building was reported full of smoke in the early hours of Sunday and the Sockburn crew had to break their way in. Luckily there were no flames. Just heaps and heaps of smoke. A clothes drier that caught on fire in a rest home in New Brighton last Friday, was put out by a single head of the sprinkler system in that room.

The cost of a funeral The cost of a funeral can add to what is often already a stressful time and we frequently see situations where it leads to further tension in family relationships. With funerals commonly costing upwards of $8000, there are a variety of options you can explore to limit the cost of your own funeral when that time comes. You can plan ahead for a funeral, and either pay in advance or make regular installments towards the total cost. It’s worth checking your life insurance policy as it may include a payout for funeral costs. Otherwise, you can save up for your funeral just by starting up a savings account at your bank. Other options include funeral insurance, a funeral trust, or a prepayment plan with a funeral director. These generally come with various fees and restrictions, so it’s worth seeking independent financial advice if you are thinking about doing this. If you need to organise a funeral and are on a low income, you may be eligible for a funeral grant from Work and Income. How much you get will depend on the deceased per-

son’s assets and, if you are a family member, your own income and assets. It’s worth noting that this grant (around $2000) is not designed to cover the full cost of a funeral. ACC can provide a funeral grant for the funeral of someone who has died as a result of an accident, a work-related disease or infection, or medical treatment. There are also options to reduce the costs; the first step is to get a couple of quotes from funeral directors if possible. Make sure you discuss options for your budget with the funeral director, and be clear about your financial limits. You should also make sure that you know exactly what you are paying for, and be aware of any ‘hidden’ charges. It can be worth asking for an itemised quote, just so that you know exactly what you are paying for. You may be able to save money by providing your own flowers or catering. You can also choose not to have a funeral service, or to conduct one yourself for example in your home. •To talk to one of our team, phone Citizens Advice Bureau on 0800 367 222.

Canterbury has set a record by winning its 14th under-12/13 interprovincial athletics championships. They won the Graham Vivian Shield for the first time since 2011 beating Auckland in second and Wellington in third. The team event was held in Hamilton and Canterbury’s 44 best under-13 athletes were too good for the rest of the country’s other 11 provinces. Team manager Lynn Ferris said it was a fantastic weekend where the Canterbury side cleaned up the competition. “I’ve done this for 12 years and that was the highest score we’ve had and it was pretty good performance. It’s all about the team which had some really top athletes and the lower ones still really contribute tor the team the success.” Fia Lai Kong was a standout for the Canterbury team finishing second overall in the under-12 girls section. Ferris said Fia did extremely well and any other year her 2943 points would have won her the individual title but she came up

HAT’S the difference between an archaeologist and a cheese judge? Nothing when they are the same person. And Thalassa (Lassa) Skinner is both. The cheese connoisseur and cheesemonger from California’s Napa Valley, recently visited this country as a judge for the annual New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards. However, Lassa didn’t plan a life in cheese. Her parents were geologists

and she studied archaeology at university eventually running a field camp in Kenya. But during her time as a student she took a part-time job working in the cheese department of a gourmet food store. There, she was introduced to

nuances and flavours she had never experienced. Her first experience of a goat’s milk cheese awakened her taste buds and began a life-long love affair that eventually became her career of choice. After completing a culinary degree in Boston, Lassa decided the Napa Valley offered a better climate and she now manages the Oxbow Cheese Merchants. She concentrates on educating cheesemongers and consumers and in 2007 launched cheese magazine Culture together with

her sister, Stephanie, who still lives in Boston. And what does she think of New Zealand cheeses? “New Zealand cheese is gaining a world-wide rep for excellence and diversity. It all comes down to the availability of good milk.” This year, more than 450 specialty cheeses, yoghurts and butters were entered in the awards. Once again Dutch-style cheeses were supreme winners from Mahoe Farmhouse Cheeses, Mercer Cheese and

Meyer Gouda Cheese. For more information on all the winning cheeses visit: www.nzsca.org.nz Lassa’s tips for cheese and wine matching: ■ Start with the lightest and move through to the heaviest. ■ Match intensities — don’t let one overpower the other. For example, a rich cabernet will overshadow a fresh goat’s cheese. A sav blanc would be better. Blue cheese and red wine fight – a late-harvest wine would be perfect. Serve pinot noir with a lightly aged gouda or cheddar.

POTATO & SQUID SALAD

This is based on a Peta Mathias recipe that she will be demonstrating at the Christchurch Food Show, April 4-6.

Peel potatoes. Place in cold, lightly salted water. Bring to boil. Simmer, until cooked. Don’t overcook. Slice thickly. Meanwhile, place eggs in cold water. Bring to boil. Simmer for 5-6 minutes. Cool, then peel and quarter. Slice shallot and place in icy water to crisp. Heat a little of the olive oil in a frying pan. Add diced chilli. Saute squid rings for about 2 minutes, until just cooked. Combine with potatoes, shallot, eggs, olives and anchovies in a bowl. Make a dressing using remaining olive oil, a little oil from the anchovies and vinegar. Season. Drizzle over salad. Serves 8 as a starter.

Rebecca explains that it’s important to help the mind be clear about the positive things that it is aiming for. Since we experience the world through our senses, she says we can use sensory techniques to bring about changes. Rebecca finds it rewarding when people who are slightly sceptical but sick of their current situation and symptoms come to see her. Attention to detail from Lexus The marques who compete in the luxury/prestige segment all demand customer satisfaction and all have a reputation for manufacturing quality products. It’s all about attention to detail, and Lexus adopt that philosophy as well, my latest drive from that stable was the beautifully-built sport coupe, the RC 350. It is a vibrant, refined, all bells and whistles car that reeks of excitement, luxury and performance, quite a lot of credentials. And that is without going into the detail of its stablemate, the RCF, a V8-powered variant which shares much the same styling. I’m not going to use column space to describe the RCF, I’m hoping I may get a chance to drive that exciting vehicle at a later date. So in standard form the RC350 has a 3.5-litre V6 engine which has provided good service for Lexus and Toyota in many an application, in its latest iteration it has a 233kW and 378Nm claim, figures which produce definite punch, and when you fit that to a vehicle which weighs in at around 1600kg there is substantial performance potential. Lexus claim a standstill to 100km/h acceleration time of 6.3sec, while by my stop watch it will lunge through a highway

sport specification Bridgestone tyres (235/40 and 265/35 x 19in). Grip is phenomenal, there’s never a feeling that the rear would step out under power, the sophisticated fully independent suspension has links and arms which keep the wheels in firm contact with the road. On that subject, the spring and damper rates while firmish don’t upset the ride comfort. That’s a hard balance to get right but the RC350 has the perfect balance. And it sits low (1.4m) which negates gravitational movement

well before its starts, the RC350 handles delightfully and sends all the right messages through the steering wheel. Steering feel is so delicate and informative, it’s like turning on velvet, all of the nuances kicked up from the road surfaces are felt, but that is a good feeling and one which affords confidence within the car when speed through a corner is requested. The RC350 is a selfish car, though. It’s a genuine coupe which has four seats but those who are in the rear don’t have a lot of head or leg room, it’s best described as 2+2, or rear seats for children only. The test car was badged Limited and it lands at $125,500. It is full spec with leather and all of the kit which makes Lexus a true luxury/ performance car maker. As much as I felt connected to the RC350, if I was an RC buyer, and I’m always hopeful, the RCF would do it for me, at $159,900 I reckon it’s a bargain.

geting the right FIRST

AID TRAINING

Not all first aid certificates are created equal. While first aid courses must achieve the prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.

T

here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below is a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term ‘workplace’ can vary from a small office to a large factory, where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide. Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in

industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. The content of courses can also vary. Employers should check to see the first aid course is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry’s risks. Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training. The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment. • Unit Standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment. • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six

hours’ training and assessment. First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose. NZQA conducts regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double highly confident accreditation in both educational performance and capability in self-assessment. This means that NZ Red Cross is a category one training provider. First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the

provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month grace period, so the cut-off period is two years and three months, which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. The refresher training should ensure the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times. Contact New Zealand Red Cross or visit www.redcross.org.nz to discuss your training requirements. Download our free life saving app as additional help to ensure that knowledge and help is always at your fingertips.

Good drama teaching allows young people to thrive in a fun-filled environment. Drama classes help them grow in self-esteem and confidence. Also, drama can help students with reading or other learning disabilities by offering an opportunity to succeed in a fun, relaxed way.

T

he aim of the Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy is not to produce stars, although this is often a natural consequence of the work we do, but to develop confidence in young people to communicate with each other and the world at large in a clear, articulate manner. By giving children opportunities to succeed in drama, children believe in themselves and their own abilities. Some of the many

consequences of our programme include improved concentration at school, better relations with peers and most importantly, a positive outlook in life. Never before has it been as important as it is now to set children up for life and prepare them with the life skills needed today and for their future. Enrol your child now at Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, we know we will make a positive change in your child’s life.

or Freeman White, home is where the art is. Home also happens to be in the heart of Hawkes Bay, where a renovated colonial villa doubles as Freeman’s home and studio. Renovations to it began after he graduated from The Learning Connexion in 2001. It has been, in his eyes, “an evolving work of art in its own right.” Just as home renovating requires a whopping amount of dedication and discipline, so too does the journey of becoming a selfsustaining artist. In Freeman’s case, all his work and constant practice paid off when, in 2006, he won first prize at the Adam Portrait Awards with his textural painting Portrait of Hans. “Winning was the most definitive point in my early artistic career,” explains Freeman. “This legitimised my work and allowed me to get my name recognised. It also opened up a number of opportunities.” Since that first major coup, Freeman’s paintings have been showcased in separate Adam Portrait Awards and other shows such as the Hawkes Bay Invitational and the Norsewear Art Awards. Freeman’s work has appeared in highly regarded publications in New Zealand and seven of his paintings reside in the collection of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery. The Royal Society of New Zealand has also collected his works, a testament to Freeman’s timeless and original style. It is no surprise then that he was nominated Wellington’s Top Artist by the Wellington Capital Times’ Best of 2010 poll. Freeman’s artistic journey has seen him undertake a number of artist residencies in locations as diverse as Edinburgh and

Freeman White

Louisiana. “I have always found these experiences inspiring and they always produce definitive work,” he says. “There is no better way to travel, really. I love doing residencies…it’s like a dream come true.” Painting commissions (such as portraits for the recent What We Do In The Shadows film), as well as exhibiting work ensures Freeman’s creative career remains sustainable. At the same time, he continues to evolve his thick and loose impasto style of painting, which is at the core of his perceptive portraits and iconic landscapes. And, always ready to up the ante, he searches out new opportunities and goals, one of which is to eventually win the coveted Wallace Art Awards. But it is his passion to steadily grow as an artist which is truly the foundation upon which he builds his flourishing career from his home base in the bay. A home of approx 293m2, just 18 years old and so faithfully maintained. So many alternatives for blended and extended families and for mature people. The blend of living areas offer versatility and choices, while the whole family can spread out in the five/six bedrooms and two/three offices. Two bathrooms and three toilets provide the most comfortable resting areas. Book lovers and computer people will make the most of the wonderful study/library room. An almost new logfire that heats a 270-litre water cylinder provides warmth, comfort and cosyness for the whole home. The double

glazing and total insulation work wonders. What a home for both winter and summer. Opens out to a patio, spreading lawns and shade trees. Cricket, BBQ and pets are a great combination here. Three big storage areas double as garaging plus a single garage attached to the home. Gardeners will relish the opportunity to pick their own grown produce from their established garden setting. This is a rare opportunity to buy an impressive, functional home in this popular location. The owner retires and so welcomes all inspections. Land zone: Green TC2 Yellow. For further details, contact Gavin Topp at Harveys – Topp Realtors Ltd (Licensed Agent REAA 2008). Phone 03 359 5595 or 027 431 7470. Call Gavin now for an appointment to view.

Must See, Must Sell, Motivated Vendor 64 Muir Avenue, Halswell The owners are committed to a new business venture out of town and this home must be sold on or before auction day. This 4 bedroom, 280m2 home features an additional living area with mezzanine floor that could be used for extended family, guest accommodation, office or teenagers retreat. The owners have lovingly redecorated this 1980’s home with a high spec designer kitchen and bathrooms plus modern decor and soft furnishings throughout, open plan kitchen/ dining and a separate formal dining and lounge. The superior deck for outdoor entertaining overlooks a beautiful garden. Upstairs, all four bedrooms are generous in size and the master enjoys a modern ensuite and wall to wall wardrobe. The double garage is complimented by a parking bay for boat or trailer. Call me today to receive an auction pack or to arrange a time to view.
